ID: Q93433

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SUMMARY

When you install version 4.0 of Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh to a remote (external or network) hard disk drive, you may receive the following error message

Disk is full
even when sufficient free space exists on the remote drive.

When you install Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, the Installer program creates a folder in the System folder of the local hard drive and attempts to install the Help and Spelling files there. If there is not enough space on the local hard drive to install these files, the error message will be displayed.

Workaround

To work around this problem, do one of the following:

  • Create more space on the local hard drive.

    -or-

  • Choose the Custom Installation option (instead of the Complete Installation option) and do not install the Help and Spelling files.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Excel creates a folder named "Microsoft" in the System folder on your local drive (with Macintosh system software versions 7.0 and later, Microsoft Excel creates this folder in the Extensions folder located in the System folder). The Installed program places the following files into this folder:

   Microsoft Help
   Microsoft Help Bookmarks
   Help on Help
   Spelling
   Custom Dictionary
MS US English Dictionary (this filename may be different if you are
using a localized versions of Excel)

These files require approximately 500K-600K of disk space on the local drive to be successfully installed. If your local drive does not have this amount of space available, Microsoft Excel will display the error message "Disk is full" and stop the installation.
