Excel Err Msg: Update References to Unopened Documents

SUMMARY

Because some macros and add-ins (such as SOLVER.XLA), create hidden names on a sheet, links may exist even after you attempt to remove all known references (including objects and formulas). In this situation, when you open a worksheet containing the hidden links, you may receive the following error message:

WORKAROUNDS

To work around this situation, do either of the following:

Workaround 1

  1. Select all information on the sheet.


  2. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.


  3. Open a new worksheet and choose Paste from the Edit menu.


  4. The hidden name(s) should not be copied from the clipboard to a new worksheet.


Workaround 2

Use the following macro to find and delete all hidden names in a sheet:


   A1: =SET.NAME("H.Names",NAMES(GET.DOCUMENT(1),2))
   A2: =IF(ISNA(H.Names))
   A3: =ALERT("No Hidden Names Were Found")
   A4: =HALT()
   A5: =END.IF()
   A6: =FOR("x",1,COUNTA(H.Names))
   A7: =DELETE.NAME(INDEX(H.Names,x))
   A8: =NEXT()
   A9: =RETURN()
