FP2000: "Home" Does Not Appear on Navigation Bars Using FTP

ID: Q219069

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000

SYMPTOMS

After you rename your home page to match the host server's default home page name (for example: index.html) and publish to a server that does not support FrontPage server extensions, all navigation bars, which previously contained a Home button, no longer have the button.

CAUSE

If you are using a server on your local computer, such as Microsoft Personal Web Server, the Home page is the default page that the web server uses.

If the default page does not exist, FrontPage does not consider the web to have a Home page.

If the Web server does not recognize a home page, each Home button will be removed from the navigation bars.

When you rename the page to something that your server does not recognize as the Home page, you are removing the Home button from the navigation bars.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Reconfigure the Web Server

Reconfigure your local Web server to use the same Home page name as your hosting web server.

Method 2: Republish Your Web

  1. Open the Web you want to move to the server. If you have renamed the Home page (for example: you renamed default.htm to index.htm), rename the page back to the original name. In Navigation view, verify that the server is recognizing the page as the Home page. See the More Information section of this article for details on this process.

  2. On the File menu, click Publish Web.

  3. In the Specify a Location you wish to publish to box, type a disk location on your local computer. For Example:

    C:\MyWeb.

  4. Click Publish.

  5. When FrontPage has finished publishing, click Done.

  6. On the File menu, click Open Web.

  7. In the Open Web dialog box, type the location you typed in step three.

  8. When the Web opens, click Folders on the View menu.

  9. Right-click your Home page and click Rename. Rename the page to match your hosting servers Home page name.

  10. On the View menu, click Navigation. Your Home page should still have the house icon in the lower-left corner of the page icon in the Navigation view.

MORE INFORMATION

To verify that your server recognizes the page as the Home page, click Navigation on the View menu. In the Navigation view, the Home page will have a small house icon in the lower-left corner of the page icon.

This icon will only appear on the page that the server recognizes as the Home page.

The file that will be identified as the Home page will depend on the Web server that you are using.
