FP2000: Folder Disappears After Renaming with Leading Underscore

SYMPTOMS

When you create a folder whose name begins with the underscore character (_), the folder and all the files contained in the folder disappear from Folders view and Hyperlinks view.

CAUSE

FrontPage automatically hides a folder if its name begins with the underscore character. By default, the Show documents in hidden directories check box is not selected.

NOTE: The only hidden folders that are displayed when Show documents in hidden directories check box is not selected is the _private folder. For more information about this folder, see the "More Information" section later in this article.

RESOLUTION

To view folders whose names begin with the underscore character in Folders view, you can display hidden folders. To do this, follow these steps:

1. On the Tools menu, click Web Settings.



2. Click the Advanced tab.



3. Click to select the Show documents in hidden directories check box.



4. Click OK.

Hidden folders are useful for files that do not need to be seen in FrontPage views; however, the folder's contents can be viewed by site visitors browsing the web. Another benefit of hidden folders is that they are excluded from the FrontPage search component if the search is being performed by the FrontPage Server Extensions (not Index Server).

When you create a new web, FrontPage automatically creates a hidden folder named _private to store form results. This hidden folder created by FrontPage cannot be viewed by site visitors browsing your web. If you want additional folders that cannot be viewed by site visitors, you can select any folder, click Properties on the File menu, and click to clear the Allow files to be browsed check box. Note that this option is not available on all supported web servers. If the option is not available on your web server, either make the folder within the _private folder or contact your web administrator to make the folder unbrowseable.
