SYMPTOMS
When you save a page from a Web as a FrontPage template, the file is stored outside of the Web in one of the following folders:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\Pages\<template folder>.tem\<template file name>.htm
-or-
C:\Winnt\Profiles\yourname\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\Pages\<template folder>.tem\<template file name>.htm
where <template folder>.tem represents the template folder, and <template file name>.htm represents the file name of the template. After you save the file as a template, the URL that appears above the document window changes to reflect the new location of the file.
NOTE: If you select the Save Template in Current Web check box in the Save As Template dialog box, the file is stored in a hidden folder in your Web, called _SharedTemplates. If you don't select this option, the file is not stored in a hidden folder in your Web. In either case, a copy of the file is stored outside the Web in one of the folders mentioned above.
RESOLUTIONMethod 1: If You Want the Template Stored Inside Your Web
If you want changes you make to a file in your Web to also be stored in a template file in your Web, follow these steps:
- Open the Web that contains the file you want to modify. On the File menu, click Open Web. Select the Web and click Open.
- On the View menu, click Folders.
- Double-click the file you want to modify.
- Make changes to your file.
NOTE: If you want to save the file to your Web as a non-template file, click Save on the File menu.
- Save the file as a template. To do this, click Save As on the File menu. In the File name box, type the name you want. In the Save as type list, select FrontPage Template (*.tem). Click Save.
- In the Save As Template dialog box, click to select the Save Template in Current Web check box. Click OK.
- If you previously saved this file as a template, you are prompted to overwrite the existing file. If you want to overwrite the file, click Yes to save the changes you made.
NOTE: When you select the Save Template in Current Web option in the Save As Template dialog box, it appears that the template file is not stored in your Web. However, it is stored in a hidden folder in the current Web. To view this file, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Web Settings.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Click to select the Show documents in hidden directories check box.
- Click OK.
Method 2: If You Want the Template Stored Outside Your Web
If you want changes you make to the file in your Web to also be stored in a template file outside your Web, follow these steps:
- Open the Web that contains the file you want to modify. On the File menu, click Open Web. Select the Web and click Open.
- On the View menu, click Folders.
- Double-click the file you want to modify.
- Make changes to your file.
NOTE: If you want to save the file to your Web as a non-template file, click Save on the File menu.
- Click Save As on the File menu. In the File name box, type the name you want. In the Save as type list, select FrontPage Template (*.tem). Click Save.
- In the Save As Template dialog box, click OK.
- If you previously saved this file as a template, you will be prompted to overwrite the existing file. If you want to overwrite the file, click Yes to save the changes you made.
NOTE: Your template files are saved to the _SharedTemplates folder. This folder is only visible when hidden directories are turned on in the Web Settings dialog box.
To turn on hidden directories, do the following:
- On the Tools menu, click Web Settings.
- In the Webs Settings dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
- Click the Show documents in hidden directories check box to select it.
- Click Apply and then click OK.
- When prompted to refresh your Web, click Yes.
