ID: Q219639

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

The Internet Assistant Wizard in Excel 97 does not recognize that FrontPage 2000 has been installed. Therefore, when you attempt to perform one of the following actions, you will be prompted with the corresponding error message.

When you use the Internet Assistant Wizard in Excel 97 to open a file directly in a FrontPage Web and insert a range of cells into a web page, you are prompted with the following error.

"FrontPage cannot be found on your machine. Please make sure that it is installed and working properly."

CAUSE

Excel 97 was designed prior to FrontPage 2000. The Internet Assistant Wizard was not designed for compatibility with FrontPage 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, import the Excel 97 document into FrontPage 2000 and convert it to HTML. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In Microsoft FrontPage, on the File menu, click Import.

  2. In the Import dialog box, click Add File.

  3. Browse to the location of the Excel 97 file and select it.

  4. In the Import dialog box, click OK.

  5. In the Folder List of Page view, right-click the Excel 97 document.

  6. Click Open With on the menu.

  7. In the Open With Editor dialog box, select FrontPage.exe and then click OK.

  8. Click OK.

FrontPage will automatically convert your document to HTML, with the cell range you selected positioned appropriately on the web page.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If you attempt to open the file directly, using the Internet Assistant Wizard in Excel 97, a similar error message will appear.

The string "<!--##table##--> is not present in the file you selected. You need to use your Web browser or text editor to insert this string into your HTML source file. This will specify exactly where the converted data should be placed.
