FP2000: How to Open a Web Using HTTP

This article describes how to open a web using HTTP and the differences between opening a web on a remote server versus a local server.

FrontPage 2000 does not open a web via HTTP by default. You must specify the HTTP protocol in the Open Web or New Web dialog box. This can also be referred to as a server-based web.

To open a web using the HTTP protocol, do the following:

1. On the File menu, click Open Web.



2. In the Open Web dialog box, type the URL for the web you want to open in the Folder name text box. For example, type:

   http://<servername>/<webname>




3. Click Open.



4. If you are accessing a web located on a remote server, you will be prompted for a user name and password. Type the user name and password and then click OK.

Differences Between Opening a Web on a Remote Server vs. a Local Server

• You are not required to connect to the Internet to edit the web.



• No user name and password are required to open the web, unless you are using FrontPage Personal Web Server.



• You must connect to your Web Presence Provider to publish your web.

• Editing your web remotely requires you to submit a user name and password.



• Internet connection is required to access the remote server. This means you need to connect to your Web Presence Provider (WPP).



• When you edit a page directly on the remote server, changes are made automatically without the use of the Publish feature.
