FP98: Hover Button Previews as a Gray Box

SYMPTOMS

When you view a page in a Web browser that contains a hover button, the component is displayed as a gray box. In addition, you will see one of the following error messages in the Microsoft Internet Explorer status bar:

Load: class fphover not found.

-or-

Exception: Java.Lang.ArraystoreException

-or-

Exception: com.ms.securityExceptionEx[fphover.init]: cannot access file /C:/myweb/progressive.jpg.

In Netscape Navigator you will see the following error message:

Applet fphover can't start: class fphover not found.

-or-

Applet Fphover can't start: exception: java.lang.NullPointerException.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when one of the following conditions are true:


   You create a page in FrontPage Editor without using FrontPage Explorer.

-or-


   The Java Virtual Machine in Internet Explorer 4.0 displays Java controls
   at a color depth of 32-bits per pixel.

-or-


   You are using a custom image for your hover button, and your Web is a
   disk-based Web.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Include Your Page in a Web

To include your page in a web, follow these steps:

Start FrontPage Explorer.

On the File menu, click Open FrontPage Web.

In the Getting Started dialog box, click More Webs.

In the Open FrontPage Web dialog box, type the path for your Web, and then click List Webs.

Select your Web. When you receive the following message, click Yes:

FrontPage needs to convert this folder into a new FrontPage Web by adding the files and folders necessary to support FrontPage features.

Do you want to convert this folder to a FrontPage Web?

Select the folder that contains your Web and click OK.

In FrontPage Explorer, double-click the page on which you want to insert the Hover Button. The page will open in FrontPage Editor.

On the Insert menu, point to Active Elements, and then click Hover Button.

On the File menu, click Save.

When you click the Preview tab or use the Preview In Browser command on the File menu, You will see the active element rather than a gray box.

Method 2: Reduce the color depth to less than 32-bits per pixel

To reduce the color depth to less than 32-bits per pixel, follow these steps:

On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings and then click Control Panel.

Double-click the Display icon.

Click the Settings tab.

In the Color Palette list, select a value other than 32-bit color.

Method 3: Upgrade to Internet Explorer 4.01.

To upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 or later, please visit the following location on the Microsoft World Wide Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/ie

Method 4: Server based web or custom image

Publish your web to a server-based web or do not use a custom image for your button.

Method 5: Reinstall the Java Virtual Machine

If the Java Virtual Machine (VM) on you computer becomes corrupt or damaged, no Java applet will work on your computer until you reinstall the Java VM.

To reinstall the updated Java VM, you may download the file from:
