FP98: Error Trying to Edit Page From Web Browser

SYMPTOMS

When you browse to the root of your Web and click Edit on the menu in Microsoft Internet Explorer, you may see a message similar to the following:

Could not open page http://localhost/test/.

NOTE: The error may be different depending on where your Web is located.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because FrontPage attempts to open the file from the current FrontPage Web by using the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) from Internet Explorer. FrontPage does not recognize a URL to the root as a page in the current Web.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem and edit the page, follow these steps:

When you receive the message described in the "Symptoms" section, click OK.

On the File menu, click Open.

Click the page you want to edit and then click OK. NOTE: You will not be able to open the page if you do not have the appropriate permissions to the Web.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

When you click Edit in Internet Explorer, FrontPage Editor starts first, followed by FrontPage Explorer. FrontPage Editor then attempts to open the Web from the URL you specified in Internet Explorer. Depending on what authentication scheme you are using, FrontPage will attempt to open the page using one of the following methods:

Method 1:Windows NT Challenge/Response (NTLM) Authentication is Enabled

FrontPage Explorer first prompts for authentication. If Windows NT Challenge/Response (NTLM) authentication is enabled on the server, FrontPage Explorer will attempt to pass your authentication using that method. If it is unsuccessful, you will be asked to enter a username and password. If authentication fails again, FrontPage will not open the page from its current location. It will copy the page and any embedded objects into a temporary location and display them in FrontPage Editor.

Method 2:Windows NT Challenge/Response (NTLM) Authentication is Not Enabled

If Windows NT Challenge/Response (NTLM) authentication is not enabled, FrontPage Explorer will prompt you for your username and password. If authentication fails, FrontPage will not open the page from its current location. It will copy the page and any embedded objects into a temporary location and display them in FrontPage Editor.

If authentication is successful using either of these methods, FrontPage will look in the current FrontPage Web for the file you were browsing. If you were browsing to the root of your Web, for example, http://localhost, FrontPage will not find that file in your Web. If you were browsing to a page in the Web, for example, http://localhost/default.htm, FrontPage will find the page and open it in FrontPage Editor.
