FP98: LZW Compressed TIFF File Appears as Broken Link Icon

ID: Q189874

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) image that has been compressed using Lempel Ziv Welch (LZW) compression in it's Alpha channel in a Web page in FrontPage Editor, the graphic appears with a broken link icon.

CAUSE

FrontPage does not support TIFF images that use the LZW compression in their Alpha channels.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, you can open the TIFF image in a program such as Microsoft Image Composer and convert it to either CompuServe Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) format or Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

LZW compression replaces strings of characters or values with single codes. It provides an efficient form of compression that prevents any data loss from occurring when you compress the file. LZW compression may also be used with GIF images.
