FrontPage Server Administrator is Slow to Start

ID: Q174068

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you start the FrontPage Server Administrator, it may take a long time to start.

CAUSE

The FrontPage Server Administrator may take a long time to start if any of the following are true:

  • You are using a multi-hosted server with FrontPage extensions.

    -Or-
  • Your FrontPage server contains a large amount of content.

RESOLUTION

For servers with large amount of content and/or many virtual servers, use the Command Line version of the FrontPage Server Administrator from the command prompt.

The Command Line Version Fpsrvadm.exe can be found in:

   FrontPage Version Folder
   ------------------------------------------------------------------------
   FrontPage 1.1 C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage\bin
   FrontPage 97 C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage\bin
   FrontPage 98 C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage\Version3.0\bin

MORE INFORMATION

The FrontPage Command Line Utility installs, updates, removes, and checks the FrontPage Server Extensions on FrontPage root webs and sub-webs, and performs other administrative FrontPage web operations. You can run Fpsrvadm.exe even when the Web server is not currently running (although the administration service for servers that uses one may need to be running).

NOTE: The Command Line Server Administrator and the FrontPage Server Administrator with the Graphical User Interface (GUI) perform similarly when they are running.
