ID: Q196934

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows

SUMMARY

This article describes the recommended method for upgrading your FrontPage Server Extensions from Internet Information Server (IIS) version 3.0 to IIS version 4.0.

MORE INFORMATION

If you plan to upgrade the FrontPage Server Extensions, perform the Server Extension upgrade BEFORE the IIS upgrade. It is recommended that you upgrade to the latest version of the FrontPage Server Extensions, which are available at the following Internet address:

http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/wpp/license.htm
  1. Rename %SystemRoot%\Frontpg.ini to Frontpg.bak.

  2. Upgrade to IIS 4.0 by running the Windows NT Option Pack setup. For more details on upgrading to IIS 4.0, please see the IIS Web site at the following Internet address:
    http://www.microsoft.com/iis

  3. NOTE: During setup, select Upgrade Plus. Uncheck the option for the FrontPage Server Extensions. This prevents installing an older version of the extensions.

  4. When the upgrade to IIS 4.0 is complete, rename %SystemRoot%\Frontpg.bak to Frontpg.ini and run the downloaded FrontPage Server Extensions executable.

For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q174347 How to Remove and Install FrontPage Server Extensions for IIS
The version of FrontPage Server Extensions installed with the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack is 3.0.2.1105. This is NOT the most recent version and there is no reason to install it. If the above procedure is not followed, the upgrade will be slower; however, there are no known FrontPage Server Extensions problems caused by it.

NOTE: FrontPage author and administrator permissions are unaffected by the steps in this article.
