FP98: Err Msg: “Unable to Complete Transaction - the Server Requested Authentication”

SYMPTOMS
When you try to open a Web with Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows, the
following error message appears:
Unable to complete transaction - the server requested authentication
information (userID/password) using an authentication scheme (NTLM) that
is unsupported by FrontPage.
Error: " NTLM authentication failed"
CAUSE
This error is caused when the client for Microsoft Networks is not
installed or the installation is corrupted.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:
Method 1: Install client for Microsoft Networks
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Network icon.
- Click Add.
- Highlight Client and click Add.
- Highlight Microsoft in the left pane, highlight the client
for Microsoft Networks in the right pane, and then click OK.
- If prompted, insert your Windows 95 or Windows 98 compact disc, and
click OK.
- When you are prompted to restart the computer, choose No.
- Double-click the client for Microsoft Networks.
- Click to select the check box next to Log on to Windows NT Domain,
and enter your logon domain.
- Click OK twice.
- After the installation, you need to restart your computer.
Method 2: Log on to the network using Dial-Up Networking
- Double-click My Computer.
- Double-click Dial-Up Networking.
- Right-click the icon for your connection, and click Properties.
- Click the Server Types tab, and select the "Log on to Network"
check box.
- Click OK.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use Basic Authentication.
