Access Violation in FrontPage When Opening a Web

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a Web in FrontPage, one of the following errors occurs.

In the event log on the server:


Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
Error #80002 Message: Unrecognized Windows exception (0xc0000005)

-OR-

In the FrontPage client:

Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
Unexpected Web Extender Error Occurred

NOTE: This is an Access Violation in Shtml.dll and will not cause the Web server to stop serving pages.

If the computer is a dual processor computer, ensure it is running the 3.02.1706 version of the extensions or later.

CAUSE

These errors indicate that there is corrupt content present in the Web. If you are able to create a subweb and the subweb functions normally, or if the error only happens when opening one particular subweb, or one particular virtual server, then content is almost certainly the cause. Any type of file can cause this problem, but the most common corruption is a badly formed meta refresh tag.

RESOLUTION

Import the files into a new Web. When the bad file is imported, the error will be produced. The last file to be successfully imported is then the cause.

NOTE: Sometimes this method does not accurately identify which file is corrupt, because it may not be easy to tell what the last file to be imported was. Dividing the files into groups can then be used to identify the file, importing half the web, then quarter, then an eight, and so on to locate the file. Be aware, that if two or more files in the Web that are causing the problem, you will need to locate all files that are corrupt.

When you have determined the problem file, remove it from the Web to resolve the issue.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the FrontPage 98 for Windows.
