New Web Command in Server Extensions Does Not Seem to Function

ID: Q201441

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions

SYMPTOMS

When you install FrontPage 2000 on a computer running Windows NT, Windows 95, or Windows 98, the New, Web command in the Server Extensions Administrator appears not to function.

CAUSE

The FrontPage Server Extensions Administrator launches the standalone Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in that is used to configure the FrontPage Server Extensions when a Web server is installed. If a Web Server is not detected, the New, Web command does not launch the Configuration Wizard and appears not to function. The Server Extensions are not installed because there is no Web server to install to.

Q178484 FP98: How to Create Disk-Based Webs in FrontPage 98

RESOLUTION

By default, the FrontPage 2000 installation does not install a Web server. If you find that you need a Web server, you can install the Microsoft Personal Web Server 4.0 for Windows 95/98, Windows NT Workstation 4.0, or IIS 4.0 for Windows NT 4.0 Server from the following Web site: Microsoft Web site.

A Web server is not needed to create Webs or content that you will publish to an existing Web site on your Internet Service Provider or on your intranet server. You can create disk-based Webs instead.
