SYMPTOMSAfter installing FrontPage extensions on an Apache Web server version 1.1.1 or later, users are allowed to open FrontPage Webs without being prompted for password. CAUSEIn Apache Web servers version 1.1.1 or later, the default "AllowOverride" directive setting in the Access.conf file is set to "None." The "AllowOverride" directive controls which options the .htaccess files in individual directories can override. By setting the default value at "None," the individual .htaccess files written by FrontPage are ignored, letting users in with no password prompt and full permissions. RESOLUTION
Change the default "AllowOverride" directive in the Access.conf file from
"AllowOverride None" to read "AllowOverride All." This will tell the
Apache Web server to honor the .htaccess files created by FrontPage. MORE INFORMATION
