Search Result Page Does Not Contain Navigation Bars

ID: Q205775

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 for Windows
  • Microsoft Index Server version 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you issue a search on a FrontPage Extended Web using Index Server, the result page does not contain the navigation bar or page banner.

CAUSE

The underlying cause is that the .idq file for the search page does not use the .htm file that contains the search bot for its template. The Server Extensions create a .htx file in the _derived folder (for example Search.htm0.htx) that is used as the template for the search results. The shared borders and navigation bars are there, but because the .htx file is not in the navigation structure, the links and page banner are not shown.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the Free WAIS Search included with the Server Extensions and perform the following steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

  2. Type "Frontpg.ini" (without the quotation marks) in the "Open:" box.

  3. Click OK.

  4. If you want to shut down Index Server globally (for all virtual servers), type NoIndexServer=1 in the FrontPage 3.0 section.

    Example:

    [FrontPage 3.0]
    FrontPageRoot=C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage
    FrontPageLangID=0x0409
    UILangAbbrev=enu
    NoAbsoluteFileResults=1
    NoServerFileResults=1
    BotCacheDir=C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage\BotCache
    CheckedHostName=
    HostOverride=
    NoIndexServer=1

  5. If you want to shut down Index Server for just one virtual server, do the following:

    Find the section of the .ini file that refers to your virtual server.

    Example:

    [Port /LM/W3SVC/3:]
    frontpageroot=C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage\version3.0
    authoring=enabled
    servertype=msiis
    serverconfig=unused
    NoIndexServer=1

    For additional information, please see the following article(s) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
    Q214515 How to Determine which Virtual Server or Multihosted Web Site References [Port /LM/W3SVC/#:]

  6. Open the Web containing the search bot in FrontPage, and on the Tools menu, click Recalculate Hyperlinks.

WORKAROUND

If you want to continue using Index Server, try the following workaround:

Instead of using navigation structure, use static links in the shared borders so that the Search.htm0.htx will contain the shared borders and links when the results are returned.

MORE INFORMATION

The WAIS Search uses the page containing the search bot as its template for results. Because that page is a part of the navigation structure of the site, the navigation bars and page banners are displayed on the results page.
