SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to open a Web using FrontPage, the following error
occurs:

Address>
where <IP Address> is the IP address of your site.
In the FrontPage Server Administrator, the following error occurs:
Web Server Configuration Problem: Document Root Missing From Config File
In the Event Viewer on the server, the following errors occur:
Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
Error #20002 Message: Cannot open file
"d:\nt4iis\wwwroot\_private\form_results.txt" for writing.
Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
Error #5001a Message: Web server configuration problem: document root
missing from Config file.
CAUSE
This is caused by changing the IP address of the home directory without
first uninstalling the FrontPage Server Extensions. If you reinstall the
extensions at this point, you will get unpredictable results.
Note: After you reinstall the extensions, you will notice that in
the Internet Service Manager there are duplicate script aliases for the
_vti folders (one set with the old IP address and one set with the new IP
address)
RESOLUTION
Uninstall the extensions from a virtual server before changing its IP
address.
WORKAROUND
If you have already changed the IP address, do the following to correct
the problem:
- Uninstall the extensions. To do this, do the following:
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the open box, type the following:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage\version3.0\bin\Fpsrvwin.exe
Note: The above path is the default installation path for the
server extensions; yours may differ.
- In the Select Server or Port box, highlight the entry for the
virtual server with the IP address that you want to change.
- Click Uninstall.
Note: Make sure that you uninstall the port 443 entry for this
virtual server as well.
- Delete the Script Aliases. To do this, do the following:
- Click Start and point to Programs.
- Point to Microsoft Internet Server (Common).
- Click Internet Service Manager.
- Double-click the WWW Service Properties.
- Click the Directories tab.
- Look for any script aliases that refer to the old IP address or
the new IP address (they will be referring to _vti folders). When you find
one, highlight it and click Remove.
- When they are all removed, click OK.
- Reinstall the extensions.
- Click Install.
- Follow the prompts to install the extensions.
