IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry.
Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if
a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring
the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help
topic in Regedt32.exe.
SYMPTOMS
When you publish a large Web, or publish over a slow link, a "server timed out" error may occur in the client.
CAUSE
This can be caused by either a short CGI timeout setting on the server or by the amount of data in the Web itself. If the server cannot process the Web in a certain amount of time (determined by the CGI timeout setting on the server), this error message occurs. The client itself can also produce this message if it does not get a response from the server after a few minutes.
RESOLUTION
Increase the time-out value on the server. To do this on an IIS computer, do the following:
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And
Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete
Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in
Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.
If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency
Repair Disk (ERD).
For IIS 3.0:
- Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/system/currentcontrolset/services/w3svc/parameters/Scripttimeout
- On the Edit menu, click DWORD, select Decimal, type a value between 10 - 2,147,883,648 (seconds), and then click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor.
For IIS 4.0- Click Start and point to Programs.
- Point to Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
- Point to Microsoft Internet Information Server.
- Click Internet Service Manager.
- Right-click the server name (not the virtual server, but the name of the computer).
- Click Properties.
- Click the Edit button.
- Click the Home Directory tab.
- Click the Configuration button.
- On the Process Options tab, choose the section for CGI Configurations.
- Type in the new timeout value in seconds (use a value between 10 - 2,147,883,648).
- Click OK three times.
WORKAROUND
When you have published successfully, you can shorten the amount of time it takes to publish by checking the "Publish changed pages only" check box.
