How to Set CGI-BIN to Executable in the MMC
ID: Q215486

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions
SYMPTOMS
When you configure a CGI-BIN directory in the content area of your Web and
attempt to use the FrontPage Server Extensions Administrator or the
FrontPage snap-in to the Internet Services Manager to mark it executable,
the Tasks option is unavailable (grayed) and you cannot make it
executable.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use the appropriate server's administration tools
to mark the directory executable.
Alternatively, you can use the Fpsrvadm.exe program to mark the folder
executable. Fpsrvadm.exe is located in C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\Bin\Fpsrvadm.exe. If you
browse to this directory using Windows Explorer, and double-click on
Fpsrvadm.exe, you get a command prompt. Select option 11 and set the
directory to executable.
If CGI-BIN is located in the root Web of the server at http://server/cgi-
bin, and this is a single-hosted server on port 80, use the following
steps:
- Double-click Fpsrvadm.exe to get a command prompt.
- Enter option 11 to set the directory to executable.
- Enter port [80]: If your server is on a different port, enter it
here, otherwise press the Enter key to accept the default 80. If this is a
multihosted server, enter host name:80).
- Enter Web name []: This is the URL of a directory, relative to
the root of the content area, such as /myweb. If CGI-BIN is in the content
area of the root, then there is no need to enter a Web name).
- Enter destination URL []: /cgi-bin. This is the URL of a folder
in the Web relative to the root of the content area such as /myweb/cgi-
bin. If CGI-BIN is in the content area of the root, then you should enter
/cgi-bin.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions.
