Cannot Open Web Using IP Address With Bypass Proxy Set

ID: Q216305

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Web in Microsoft FrontPage by using the Web's IP address, you are prompted for a name and password. You are unable to open the Web, even if you supply the correct name and password.

This problem is typically seen in an intranet environment, where FrontPage is being used to open a Web by its IP address on a server that resides on the intranet.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because your computer is configured to bypass the proxy settings in Microsoft Internet Explorer, but no IP address exceptions have been set.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you need to add the IP address, or the range of IP addresses you gain access to internally to your list of Exceptions in Internet Explorer's Proxy settings.

To do this:

  1. Start FrontPage.

  2. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Proxy Settings.

  3. Click LAN Settings.

  4. Make sure the Bypass proxy server for local addresses option is selected.

  5. Click the Advanced tab.

  6. In the Exceptions box, add the IP address of the Web you are trying to open. If you are accessing multiple servers, you can type each of these separated by a semi-colon. For example:
    157.55.224.145;157.55.224.31

Alternatively, you could type a range to specify all of the servers. For example:
    157.55.224.*
    -or-
    157.55.*.*

  7. After you type the information into the Exceptions box, click OK to each of the prompts. You also need to close FrontPage and re-open it before the settings can take effect.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

By enabling Internet Explorer to bypass the Proxy server, you are instructing the browser and FrontPage to use the local LAN's name resolution convention.

When you attempt to open a FrontPage Web by the IP Address, and Proxy settings are set to bypass the Proxy server, you are prompted for authentication and cannot open the Web.

Though you do not receive an error message in FrontPage when trying to open the Web, error messages are recorded in the Wecerr.txt log file.

With Windows NT Challenge/Response and Basic Authentication enabled, you see the following:

Server error: The method '' is not recognized.
If just Windows NT Challenge and Response is enabled, you see the following:
Could not find a web server at <IP Address> on port <Port #>. Please check to make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, the web server may be temporarily out of service.
If you are using just Basic Authentication, you may receive the following error:
The server sent a response, which FrontPage could not parse. If you are trying to connect to a FrontPage server, check with the server's administrator to make sure the FrontPage server extensions are installed properly.
