Tasks Option Is Disabled in the MMC for FrontPage Snap-in

ID: Q229932

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions

SYMPTOMS

After you install the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions, and open the Internet Service Manager and select the properties for a virtual server, the Task option is disabled (grayed out). Because the Task option is disabled, you cannot administer the Server Extensions.

CAUSE

It is likely that the FrontPage Server Extensions snap-in is not snapped into the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). The actual cause for this problem has yet to be determined and is still being researched.

Note: The Task option is also unavailable if you are working remotely using the Internet Service Manager (MMC). You must be logged on as the administrator locally to the computer that you are installing the Server Extensions on.

WORKAROUND

You can verify that the FrontPage Server Extensions snap-in is snapped into the MMC by doing the following:

  1. Open the Internet Service Manager:

    1. Click Start, point to Programs, and point to Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.

    2. Point to Microsoft Internet Information Server.

    3. Click Internet Service Manager.

  2. In the MMC, click Add/Remove Snap-in on the Console menu.

  3. Click the Extensions tab.

  4. Make sure the FrontPage Server Extensions check box is checked.

After you perform the steps above, the Task option should be available.

In some circumstances, Microsoft has had reports that even after verifying that the snap-in is enabled, the Task option is still disabled. This behavior has primarily been seen on Primary Domain Controllers (PDC) or Backup Domain Controllers (BDC), but has also been seen on member servers as well.

If the problem is occurring on a Web server that resides on a PDC or BDC, it is possible to work around the problem by doing the following:
  1. Create a new Domain account using User Manager for Domains.

  2. Add the new Domain account to the Administrators group.

  3. Use the new Domain account to administer the Server Extensions.

This workaround has proven to be successful in all reported incidents.
