Posts Do Not Display If Discussion Web Uses Built-in Source Control

ID: Q230183

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions

SYMPTOMS

When you create a discussion Web and configure the FrontPage built-in source control for the Web, posts to the discussion Web do not display when you select Refresh the main page. This problem occurs with the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions version 4.0.2.2717.

CAUSE

The Internet guest account, IUSR_computername, only has Read and Execute permissions to the _derived, _vti_pvt\_derived and _vti_pvt\_vti_cnf folders in the discussion Web. This prevents the Server Extensions from writing information that is required for the posts to be available.

RESOLUTION

To resolved this issue, turn off the FrontPage built-in source control, and then perform a Recalculate Web. When the built-in source control is not in use, the problem does not occur.

WORKAROUND

To work around the problem, use the following steps:

  1. In Windows Explorer, browse to the content directory on the server where the discussion Web resides.

  2. Locate the _derived folder in the root of the discussion Web.

  3. Right-click on _derived and click Properties.

  4. In the Properties dialog, click Security, and then click Permissions.

  5. Click the IUSR_computername account and in the Type of Access box, select Change.

  6. Make sure both checkboxes for Replace Permissions on Subdirectories and Replace Permissions on Existing Files are checked, and then click OK.

  7. Additionally, it is necessary to use the same steps above to grant IUSR Change permission to the _vti_pvt\_derived and _vti_pvt\_vti_cnf folders in the discussion Web.

  8. After you make these changes, posts to the discussion Web will be immediately available in the browser after clicking Refresh the main page.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions.
