FP1: Edited File Not Automatically Added to Import List

SYMPTOMS

When any editor other than a FrontPage Editor is assigned as the default editor for HTM or HTML files, the page is not automatically displayed in the import list.

WORKAROUND

To modify the HTML pages with an editor other than FrontPage Editor, use the following steps:

1. Open FrontPage Explorer.



2. On the Tools menu, click Configure Editors.



3. In the Type column, find the period, and select the editor in that row. Click the Modify button.



4. In the "Editor Name" box, enter the name of the editor you want to use.



5. On the command line, enter the full path to the executable file of the editor you want to use, or click the browse button and find it on your hard disk drive.



6. Click OK twice.



7. In the link view, right-click the page you want to open.



8. Click Open With on the shortcut menu.
   
   The Open With Editor box will display all the editors that are configured to work with FrontPage.



9. Double-click the editor you want to use.
   
   This will open the page with that editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft FrontPage 97 for Windows with Bonus Pack.

FrontPage Editor is the only editor that has the ability to save a modified page directly to an active Web. When any other editor is used to modify a page, FrontPage Explorer inserts this page on the import list so that it can be incorporated into the current Web. If the page is not imported, the changes will not be recognized.
