FP1: How to Authorize an Author for FrontPage with IIS

ID: Q154676

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft FrontPage for Windows 1.1

SUMMARY

This article describes how to authorize a Web author in Microsoft FrontPage on a computer that is running Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS), versions 1.0 and 2.0, and FrontPage 1.1 Server Extensions.

MORE INFORMATION

To authorize a Web author in Microsoft FrontPage on a computer running IIS and the FrontPage Server Extensions, use the following steps:

  1. Log on to the Windows NT Server as an Administrator; do not log on as a User with Administrative permissions.

NOTE: In some Windows NT network configurations, individual user accounts with Administrative privileges may be limited by system or domain policies. For this reason we recommend that you log on as Administrator.

  2. Start the User Manager on the Windows NT Server and confirm that the author's account exists, or create a new user account if the account does not exist.

To create a new user account, follow these steps:

    1. On the User menu, click New User.

    2. In the New User dialog box, type a new name in the Username box.

    3. Type a password for the new user in the Password and Confirm Password boxes.

    4. Click Add.

NOTE: For better performance, create a local group for FrontPage authors. Windows NT validates a FrontPage author that is a member of such a group much faster than it does for an author that is not a member of a local group.

  3. On the Policies menu, click User Rights.

  4. In the Rights list, click Log On Locally, and click Add.

  5. From the List Names From list in the Add Users And Groups dialog box, click the item that corresponds to the domain name of your local machine.

  6. To add an individual user, click Show Users, click the user in the Names list, click Add, and then click OK. If you created a local group, click the group name, click Add, and then click OK.

  7. In the User Rights Policy dialog box, click OK, and then close the User Manager dialog box.

NOTE: You must grant the user account or the local group the correct permissions in the Windows NT File System (NTFS), including the right to list all directories that contain the IIS content.

  8. Start FrontPage Explorer and open the Web to which you will give the user permission to be an author. On the Tools menu, click Permissions.

  9. In the Web Permissions dialog box, click the Authors Tab, click Add next to "Authors for this Web." Click the user's name in the New Author dialog box, and then click OK.

  10. Click Apply in the Web Permissions dialog box, and then click OK.

The user will be authorized as an author for the Web you specified.
