MOD2000: No Files Added When Adding Multiple Files in Package and Deployment Wizard

SYMPTOMS

If you try to add a large number of files at once in the Add File dialog box of the Package and Deployment Wizard, no files are added. Files are added, however, if you reduce the number of files.

CAUSE

The Add File dialog box has a limitation of 229 characters.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you select multiple files, a resulting string of the files appears in the File Name box. In the box, each file name is surrounded by quotation marks, and each file name is separated by single spaces. If the string, including the spaces and the quotation marks, is longer than 229 characters, the files are not added.

CAUTION: Following the steps in this example will modify the sample database Northwind.mdb. You may want to back up the Northwind.mdb file and perform these steps on a copy of the database.

1. Open the sample database Northwind.mdb.
   
   NOTE: If you do not have the sample database Northwind.mdb, open any database in which you already have a saved Visual Basic for Applications module.



2. Press ALT+F11 to switch to the Visual Basic Editor.



3. On the Add-Ins menu, if the Package and Deployment Wizard is not listed, click Add-In Manager.



4. In the Available Add-Ins list, click VBA Package and Deployment Wizard.



5. Under Load Behavior, click Loaded/Unloaded, and then click OK.



6. On the Add-Ins menu, click Package and Deployment Wizard.



7. In the Package and Deployment Wizard dialog box, click Package.



8. Click Next and accept the defaults until you get to the Package and Deployment Wizard - Included Files screen.



9. Click Add.



10. Insert the first Office 2000 compact disc into the CD-ROM drive.



11. In the Look In box of the Add File dialog box, locate the Office 2000 compact disc.



12. Locate the \IE5\En folder and open it.



13. In the Files of Type box, click All Files (*.*).



14. Click the first file in the list, hold down the SHIFT key, and then click the last file. Note that a string of the files appears in the File Name box.



15. Click Open. Note that the file list is immediately displayed again and that none of the files you chose is added.



16. If you then click Add again and select the first seven or so files from the \IE5\En folder, they are added when you click Open.
