MOD2000: New Package Shortcut Is Invalid If Installed After Access Is Removed

ID: Q236542

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 2000 Developer, version 2000
  • Microsoft Access 2000

Moderate: Requires basic macro, coding, and interoperability skills.

SYMPTOMS

When you install a package that includes Access Run-time and try to run the application, the following alert messages appear:

A message titled Missing Shortcut appears briefly:

Windows is searching for MSACCESS.EXE. To locate it yourself, click Browse.
Next a message titled Problem with Shortcut appears:
The item 'MSACCESS.EXE' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved. The nearest match, based on size, date, and type, is '<path to msaccess.exe>'. Do you want this shortcut to point to this item?

CAUSE

Previously you installed a package that included Microsoft Access 2000 Run-time, then installed the retail version of Microsoft Access 2000, and finally uninstalled the retail version of Access. After this, any new package that includes Access Run-time does not create the correct shortcut. This is because the shortcut points to the location where the retail version of Access was previously installed.

RESOLUTION

If you click Yes on the second message, the package opens and you never see the error message again. However, if you click No, you see the same alerts again when you try to click the shortcut.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
