OFF2000: Error Message Turning On "Provide Feedback with Sound" Option

SYMPTOMS

When you turn on the Provide feedback with sound option in any of the programs listed in the "Applies to" section of this article, the following error message may appear after you click OK in the Options dialog box:

Microsoft Office Sounds are not installed on your system. To install them, point to the Help menu and click Office on the Web to connect to Office Update.


CAUSE

The Microsoft Office Sounds files are not installed when you run the Setup program for Microsoft Office.


RESOLUTION

To install the sounds files, you have to download them from the following Microsoft World Wide Web site:

http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/2000/downloadDetails/sounds.htm

How to Turn On the Sound Option

  1. Start any of the Office 2000 programs mentioned in the "Applies to" section of this article.


  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  3. In the Options dialog box, click the General tab.


  4. Select the Provide feedback with sound check box, and then click OK.



How to Verify That the "Provide Feedback with Sound" Setting Is Working

To verify that the Provide feedback with sound setting is working, do the following in Microsoft Excel:
  1. Enter the following into a new workbook:
    
       A1: 4
       A2: 3
       A3: 7 


  2. Select cell A1.


  3. On the Data menu, click Sort.


  4. In the Sort dialog box, click OK.

    You should hear a sound as the data is sorted.



How to Preview, Change, or Remove Sounds for Office Program Events

  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. In Control Panel, double-click the Sounds icon.


  3. In the Sounds Properties dialog box, click Microsoft Office in the Events list.

    All the sounds listed under Microsoft Office are those related to events in the Office programs.


  4. To preview any of the sounds, select an event, and then click Play (black triangle) under Preview.


  5. To change the sound for an event, follow these steps:

    1. Select an event from the Event list box.


    2. Click Browse. Locate
      <drive>:\Windows\Media\Microsoft Office 2000

      where <drive> is the drive where Windows is installed.


    3. Click any of the .wav files listed in the folder.


    4. Click OK.




  6. To remove the sound for an event, use the following steps:

    1. Select an event from the Event list that you want to remove the sound from.


    2. Select (None) on the Name list.

      Click Yes when prompted with the following message:
      Are you sure you do not want to have any sound for this event?




  7. Click OK to close the Sounds Properties dialog box.
