Opening a File from an FTP Site

To open a file from an FTP site, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Open.


  2. In the Look In list, click Add/Modify FTP Locations.


  3. In the Name Of FTP Site box, type the name of the FTP server. For example, if the FTP site is located on the Internet, you will enter the name using this format:


  4. ftp://ftp.microsoft.com
  5. If the FTP site is part of your company's Intranet, you will enter the name using this format:


  6. ftp://<servername>/<folder>
  7. If the FTP site supports logging in as anonymous, click the Anonymous option. If you must have a user account on the FTP site, click the User option and then type your name in the User list.


  8. Type your password (if you have one) in the Password box.


  9. Click Add.


  10. Click OK.


The FTP site will now appear in the list of sites where you can open or save files.

Saving a File to an FTP Site

  1. On the File menu, click Save As.


  2. In the Look In list click the name of the FTP location. The path should look similar to the following:
    ftp://ftp.microsoft.com
    If you have not defined an FTP site, see the "Opening a File from an FTP Site" section.


If you have rights to the FTP site, you should be able to save files to the FTP site.

Troubleshooting

To verify your connection to the FTP site, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and click Run.


  2. Type the name of the FTP site. For example:

    ftp://ftp.microsoft.com


If your Web browser starts and you can see the contents of the FTP site, you have the correct access to the site.

This feature requires that you have open and save privileges on the FTP site.
