OFF2000: "The feature you are trying to use.." Error Removing Office

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Office Setup program and choose Remove Office, error messages similar to the following will appear, depending on the installation source.

Installed from CD-ROM

The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
When you click OK, the following error appears:
Could not find: <Office 2000 product>. Please try another location.
where<Office 2000 product> is the name of the specific Office product being used.
When you click Cancel to the first error, the following error message appears:
Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product <Office 2000 product>. The Windows installer cannot continue.
where <Office 2000 product> is the name of the specific Office product being used.
This is followed by:
Installation ended prematurely because of an error.

Installed from a Network Server

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
When you click OK, the following error appears
Could not find: <path to server>\data1.msi. Please try another location.

where <path to server> is the network path to the server you installed from.
When you click Cancel to the first error, the following error message appears
Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product <Office 2000 product>. The Windows installer cannot continue.
where <Office 2000 product> is the name of the specific Office product being used.
This is followed by:
Installation ended prematurely because of an error.


CAUSE

These error messages occur when you do the following when installing Office:

  • One or more Office components are running from the CD-ROM or network.


  • -and-

  • The disc has been removed from the CD-ROM drive or the network server is unavailable.


  • -and-

  • You run Setup and click Remove Office.



RESOLUTION

To continue Setup without these errors, you must insert your Office disc into the CD-ROM drive, or restore network connectivity before the Windows Installer can continue. You cannot remove Office in these cases when any components are registered to run from the CD-ROM.
