OFF2000: Setup Appears to Hang Followed by Internal Error 2336 or 2755

SYMPTOMS

When you install Office 2000, Setup may seem very slow to update the Windows Installer, and then one of the following error message appears:

Internal error 2336: Please Contact Product Support for assistance.
-or-
Internal error 2755: Please Contact Product Support for assistance.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You install Office 2000 on Windows NT.

    -and-


  • The \WinNT directory is located on an NTFS partition.

    -and-


  • You have a folder called \Installer under the \WinNT folder, and you do not have full access permissions to the \Installer folder.


NOTE: You can also see this behavior if you only have Read permissions to the \WinNT folder. This condition prevents the \Installer folder from being created by Office Setup.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, change the permissions on the \Installer folder to Full Control for the Everyone group.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
