CG5: Blue Screen Error when Rotating an Autoshape on Windows NT 4 .0 Service Pack 3

SYMPTOMS

If you use the free rotation tool to rotate an autoshape, you may recieve a blue screen error similar to the following:

STOP:
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED ADDRESS <hex code> has base at <hex code> -ntoskrnl
DWORD DUMP BUILD
Restart and set the recovery options in the system control panel or the /CRASHDEBUG system start option. If this message reappears, contact your system administrator or technical support group.
NOTE:<hex code> represents eight numbers or letters; these hexidecimal numbers may differ each time the error is recieved. In addition to the information previously listed, you will see many other hexidecimals.

Once this message is recieved, you must manually reboot the system.


CAUSE

This error occurs when all of the following conditions are true.

  • The operating system is Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 3.


  • Autoshapes are inserted from the More Autoshapes option.


  • A fill effect such as texture, gradient, or picture is applied to the inserted Autoshape.


  • The object is rotated using the Free Rotate tool.



RESOLUTION

This issue has been addressed in the Windows NT Service Pack 4. Please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base for information on obtaining Service Pack 4.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft PowerPoint version 2000 for Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.
