OFF2000: Showing Office Assistant Causes Invalid Page Fault or Crashes Program

The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMS
When you show the Microsoft Office Assistant by clicking Show the Office Assistant on the Help menu, the Microsoft Office program stops responding, or the following message appears:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, you see an error message similar to the following:
<PROGRAM> caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:28753463.
Where <PROGRAM> is either one of the Microsoft Office programs or the program AGENTSVR. When you click Close, the program shuts down.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
- You install the Microsoft Office 2000 Disk 1 and set the Microsoft Office Assistant to Run from My Computer.
-and-
- You install Microsoft Publisher 2000 from the Microsoft Office 2000 Disk 2 and set the Microsoft Office Assistant to Not Available.
-and-
- You click Show the Office Assistant on the Help menu of another Microsoft Office 2000 program while Microsoft Publisher 2000 is running.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, set the Microsoft Office Assistant from the Microsoft Office 2000 Disk 2 to Run from My Computer. The following procedure describes how to do this:
- Start the Microsoft Office 2000 Disk 2 installation. To start the Microsoft Office 2000 Disk 2 installation, place the Microsoft Office 2000 Disk 2 in the CD-ROM drive. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs. Select Microsoft Office 2000 Disc 2 and click Add/Remove.
- Click Add or Remove Features.
- Expand the Office Tools group and set Office Assistant to Run from My Computer.
- Click Update Now. If prompted, restart your computer.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed
at the beginning of this article.
