OFF2000: Error Installing Office on Windows NT with Internet Explorer 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you run setup for Office, you may receive the following error:

Microsoft Office 2000 setup needs to replace some Windows system components. This requires administrator rights. Please log in as an administrator to complete Microsoft Office 2000 setup.


CAUSE

You will receive the above error if all of the following are true:

  • You are using Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.


  • -and-

  • You are logged in as a non-administrative user.


  • -and-

  • You do not have Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or later installed. Windows NT 4.0 ships with Internet Explorer 2.0.



RESOLUTION

To prevent the above error from ocurring when non-administrative users run Office setup, follow these steps:

  1. Log on as a member of the Administrators group.


  2. Install Internet Explorer 3.0 or later.


NOTE: If you want to install Internet Explorer 5 from the Office 2000 compact disc, double-click IE5Setup.exe in the \IE5\En folder on the root of the Office compact disc.


MORE INFORMATION

For a non-administrative user to run Office setup, an administrator must either advertise Office using the /j switch, or apply the AlwaysInstallElevated policy. Once this is done, the non-administrative user can run Office setup, but they must use either /q or /qb switch in the command-line.
