OFF2000: AlwaysInstallElevated Key Is Reset to Zero

ID: Q229459

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you install the Windows Installer files, the following registry subkeys below

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
are reset to a value of 0 (zero):
  • AlwaysInstallElevated

  • DisableBrowse

  • DisablePatch

CAUSE

For security reasons, the Windows Installer setup (Instmsiw.exe) will always reset these registry values to 0 (zero). This will only happen when you are installing the Windows Installer and not when the Windows Installer needs to run.

MORE INFORMATION

The Windows Installer System Policy template provides the following setting for the Windows Installer under both Default Computer and Default User:

Always install with elevated privileges
When this policy is implemented, the following changes are made to the registry:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

  • The AlwaysInstallElevated value is set to 1.

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

  • The AlwaysInstallElevated value is set to 1.

If the AlwaysInstallElevated value under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
is reset to 0 when you install the Windows Installer, it will revert back to 1 the next time you log in if you have the above system policies in effect.
