OFF2000: Error Starting Programs After Disabling Profiles

ID: Q234017

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 2000

SYMPTOMS

If you click Programs on the Start menu, all of the Office program shortcuts are missing.

-and-

If you start one of the Office programs from the executables (such as Excel.exe) in the \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder, you may receive the following error:

This application must be installed to run. Please run Setup from the location where you originally installed the application.

CAUSE

You may experience these problems if all of the following conditions are true:

  • You are using either Windows 95 or Windows 98.

  • -and-

  • You had Profiles enabled with a per-user Start menu. (You selected the Include Start menu and Program groups in user settings option on the User Profiles tab of the Passwords Properties dialog box.)

-and-

Either of the following sets of conditions is true:
  • You ran Office Setup with Profiles enabled.

  • -and-

  • You then disabled Profiles.

-or-
  • You had an existing profile.

  • -and-

  • You then disabled Profiles.

  • -and-

  • You ran Office Setup.

  • -and-

  • You then enabled Profiles again and logged into an existing profile.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, run Setup for Office.

NOTE: If you have re-enabled Profiles, you may have to run setup for each existing profile. In this configuration, each user who has an existing profile on Windows 95/98 must run Setup for Office. The only users who will not have to run Setup are those who do not have an existing profile on the com uter; when they log on for the first time the default user profile will be copied into their profile. This default user profile includes all of the registry information and shortcuts necessary to start Office programs.
