  • Microsoft Office 2000

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS

When you view your Product ID number in the startup splash screen for the Office programs, it may be different from the number that appears in the dialog box when you click About <program name> on the Help menu.

CAUSE

You may have two different Product ID numbers if you previously installed a Beta version of Office 2000.

NOTE: The Product ID in the splash screen is the number from your Beta version of Office.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To change the Product ID number in the splash screen so it correctly matches the Product ID in the About <program name> dialog box, do the following:

  1. On the Start menu, click Run.

  2. In the Open box, type Regedit and click OK.

  3. Locate and select the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\UserInfo

  4. On the Edit menu, click Rename.

  5. Type OldUserInfo and press ENTER.

  6. On the Registry menu, click Exit.

  7. Start one of the Office programs.

  8. The Product ID in the splash screen is now the same as the Product ID in the About <program name> dialog box.
