OFF2000: Outlook Express Icon Appears When Internet Explorer Is Default Browser

ID: Q235527

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you use a transform created by the Custom Installation Wizard (CIW) during Office Setup, an Outlook Express icon appears on your desktop.

CAUSE

An Outlook Express icon appears on your desktop if all of the following are true:

  • You used the CIW to create a transform to be used with Office Setup.

  • -and-

  • In Step 15 of the CIW, you selected the Upgrade to Internet Explorer 5 option.

  • -and-

  • In Step 15 of the CIW, you selected the Make Internet Explorer 5 the default browser check box.

WORKAROUND

To install Internet Explorer 5 as your default browser without having an Outlook Express icon added to your Desktop, please do the following:

  1. Open your transform in the CIW.

  2. In the Add Installations and Run Programs dialog box (Step 13), click Add.

  3. In the Command line box, type the following command line:
    c:\Windows\System\Regsvr32.exe /n /i:ForceAssoc shdocvw.dll

  4. The path to Regsvr32.exe may vary on your computer. Please change this path accordingly. Also, in the current version of the CIW and the Windows Installer, you cannot use environment variables, so a path should be specified.

NOTE: On Windows NT, you should be able to leave the path off of the above command line. The path specification is primarily a Windows 95 and Windows 98 requirement.
  5. Click OK.

  6. Click Next until you get to the Customize IE 5 Installation Options dialog box (Step 15).

  7. In the Customize IE 5 Installation Options dialog box (Step 15), clear the Make Internet Explorer 5 the default browser check box.

  8. If you want to have an Internet Explorer icon on your desktop, select the Show Internet Explorer 5 icon on the user's computer check box.

  9. NOTE: Whether you select the Show Internet Explorer 5 icon on the user's computer check box, the Outlook Express icon will not be shown on the desktop.

  10. Click Finish to save your changes to the transform.

  11. Run Setup using your transform.
