SUMMARY

Microsoft Office installs, by default, the Microsoft Office 2000 File Optimizer. The purpose of the File Optimizer is to organize files used by Office on the your hard disk in a way that reduces the time required to start Office programs. The File Optimizer is designed to run automatically any time it determines your Office files are arranged in a non-optimal fashion. However, when it does run you have the option of canceling the optimization as well as the option of preventing it from ever running again.

The "More Information" section of this article contains the steps you can take to prevent the Microsoft Office 2000 File Optimizer from running.

MORE INFORMATION

If you want to prevent the Microsoft Office 2000 File Optimizer from ever starting, do the following:

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

NOTE: The File Optimizer is only installed on computers using Windows 95 or Windows 98. So there is no need to perform these steps if you are using Windows NT.

  1. On the Start menu, click Run.

  2. In the Open box, type Regedit and click OK.

  3. Locate and select the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common

  4. If you have a subkey called TuneUp, skip ahead to step 8.

  5. On the Edit menu, point to New and then click Key.

  6. With New Key #1 selected (highlighted), type TuneUp and then press ENTER.

  7. With TuneUp selected, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.

  8. With New Value #1 selected, type Disabled and then press ENTER.

  9. Double-click Disabled. Change the Value data to 1, and then click OK.

  10. On the Registry menu, click Exit.

NOTE: Turning off the Microsoft Office 2000 File Optimizer so that it never runs may significantly increase the startup times for the Office programs.

If you have turned off the File Optimizer from automatically running, you can always start it manually by double-clicking Otuneup.exe in the \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder.
