OFF2000: Prompted to Insert CD-ROM When You Start an Office Program

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start a Microsoft Office program, you may receive one of the following messages from the Windows Installer

The feature that you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.

Insert the cd-rom disk and click OK.
where cd-rom refers to the particular version of Office 2000 or the Office program that you are attempting to start.
-or-
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path on the box below.
If you click Cancel, the Office program starts normally.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs when Microsoft Clip Gallery 5.0 is not installed on your hard disk, but remains on a network share or on the installation CD-ROM.

When the Windows Installer determines that Clip Gallery is not installed on your hard disk, you are prompted to insert the CD-ROM or reconnect to the network share that Clip Gallery is located on.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install Clip Gallery to your hard disk:

  1. Quit all Office 2000 programs.


  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click the version of Office 2000 or the Office program from which you installed Clip Gallery.


  5. Click Add or Remove Features.


  6. Click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Office Tools to expand the branch.


  7. Click the icon next to Clip Gallery, and then click Run from My Computer.

    NOTE: The catalog files and clip files can remain on the CD-ROM or the network share.


  8. Click Update Now.
