OFF97: Web Find Fast Returns Inconsistent Number of Hits

ID: Q166036

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Office Web Find Fast indexer to return Web search results to your Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) page, the number of results that is returned is incorrect and inconsistent.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You enter the same search criteria in more than one search field (for example, in both the Title field and the Words And Phrases field).

    -and-

  • The query you use matches ANY criteria fields.

This problem occurs when the Microsoft Office Web Find Fast encounters a logical OR condition.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, eliminate the implied logical OR condition. To do this, do either of the following:

  • Do not specify criteria for more than one search field.

    -or-

  • Change the match criteria to ALL instead of ANY.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

By matching ANY search criteria fields, you create an OR condition. For example, if your search page uses search fields for Title And Phrases, and you type the word "urgent" (without the quotation marks) in both fields, you create an OR condition. Web Find Fast finds a document title that contains the word "urgent" or a phrase that contains the word "urgent" in the body of a document. When this condition occurs, Microsoft Web Find Fast fails to return the correct number of hit results.

The Microsoft Office Web Find Fast indexer is available on the Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition for Windows compact disc in the Srvpack folder. This utility allows you to index multiple document locations on your Web server. You can combine all of these locations into one index, which makes searching for any file on your Web server as easy as clicking your browser. These results are then returned to the Web page that is generated by Microsoft Office Web Find Fast. The links that are returned function as either Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) or universal naming convention (UNC) file references. You can customize all HTML pages to use the features of Microsoft Office Web Find Fast, including sorting by relevance, file name, save date, and size.
