OFF97: Some Features Are Not Functional When System Policies Are Enabled

ID: Q166096

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

In step 1 of the Web Page Wizard, the only option that you see is <blank>. The list box in step 2 does not contain any entries.

When you run the Web Page Wizard, you may receive the following error message:

Word cannot find the required registry information. To restore the registry, run Setup again. Make sure Web Page Authoring (HTML) is selected, even if you already installed it.

CAUSE

These problems may occur if you apply system policies for some, but not all of the settings that are available for the Microsoft Office programs.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2).

MORE INFORMATION

For additional information about SR-2, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q151261 OFF97: How to Obtain and Install MS Office 97 SR-2
The Microsoft Office 97 Resource Kit includes a collection of templates that you can use with the System Policy Editor to specify user policies for the Office programs.

You can edit the registry by using System Policy Editor (Poledit.exe) or Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). However, check with your network administrator before you make any changes to the registry.

If you are using the Office 97 system policy templates that are included in the Microsoft Office 97 Resource Kit, you must use the version of the System Policy Editor that is included in the Microsoft Office 97 Resource Kit or the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit.

When you use the policy template that is included in the Microsoft Office 97 Resource Kit to create system policies for your users, registry entries are made under the following key

   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\<app>
where <app> is the application for which the policy is set.

Under circumstances in which no policy is used for the application, no initial registry entry is created for <app> until the application is run. At that time, the default registry entries for the application that is run are created. When policies are used, these registry entries determine that entries already exist for <app> and no additional entries are created. This behavior prevents users from using some of the functionality of the program.
