SYMPTOMS

When you save a file, you may receive the following message:

Do you want to replace the existing <file name>?
This message may occur even though the file "<file name>" has been previously renamed.

Clicking Yes to replace the file will overwrite the file you renamed with the new file that you are attempting to save.

CAUSE

This problem occurs in Windows when you do the following:

  1. Save a file with the default file name extension.

  2. Close the file.

  3. Rename that file so the file name extension is changed, but still starts with the default extension; for example, if you rename MyDoc.doc to MyDoc.document or MyDoc.doc2.

  4. Attempt to save another file to the original name of the file you just renamed; for example, if you attempt to save the file as MyDoc.doc.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, click No, and save your file with a different name.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
