SUMMARY
This article explains how to determine whether Microsoft Office 97 (SR-1)
is installed.
SR-1 is available as:
- A patch, which you can download to update an existing installation
of Microsoft Office 97.
- A full CD version called the SR-1 Enterprise Update, which you can use
to reinstall an updated version of Microsoft Office 97.
NOTE: The SR-1 Enterprise Update is no longer available on the Microsoft
Web site. It has been replaced by the SR-2 Replacement CD which includes
all the SR-1 fixes and enhancements. For more information about this
second release of Office 97, please see the following articles in the

MORE INFORMATION
To determine whether SR-1 is installed, use any of the following methods.
Method 1: Use the Office 97 Version Checker
Download, install, and run the Office 97 Version Checker, which tells you whether SR-1 is installed.
You can download the Microsoft Office 97 Version Checker from the following Web address:
http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/articles/sr2fact.htm
The Microsoft Office 97 Version Checker is also available on the SR-2 Patch CD. You can order an SR-2 Patch CD from the following Web address:
http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/articles/sr2directdrive.htm Method 2: Check the About Dialog Box
To use this method, check the About dialog box in each Office 97 program
for an updated version number. For example, to check Microsoft Excel,
follow these steps:
- Open Microsoft Excel 97.
- On the Help menu, click About Microsoft Excel.
- Determine whether the dialog box contains the following text:
Microsoft Excel 97 SR-1
Method 3: Check the STF File (for the SR-1 Enterprise Update)
To use this method, open the STF file and check the App Version line for an
updated version number. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then
click WordPad.
- On the File menu, click Open, and then open the following file:
Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Setup\<filename>.stf
NOTE: <Filename> depends on the version of Microsoft Office you
installed. For example, the Professional version has the following file
name:
off97pro.stf
- Note the version in the second line of text. This line appears similar
to the following:
App Version 97.1.0.0709(1033)
The integer 1 that follows 97 identifies SR-1. This number is 0 if SR-1
is not installed. For example, if the CD version of SR-1 is NOT
installed, the number appears similar to the following:
97.0.0.0709(1033)
The string 0709 identifies the date (July 9) on which the STF file was
created or the date on which Office was installed.
NOTE: The STF displays the new version number only if you use the CD
version of SR-1.
Method 4: Check the Registry
The SR-1 patch setup will create a registry key when installed. Check to
see if the registry key exists. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the Start menu, click Run. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems
that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee
that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be
solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys
And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that
you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and
User.dat) before you edit the registry.
- Check to see if the following registry key exists:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Common\InstallRootSR1
