OFF97: Inserting MS Excel Object Causes Errors

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a Microsoft Excel object into another program, you may receive an error similar to one of the following error messages:

Dr. Watson for Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

Rpcss.exe
Exception:access violation(0xc0000005), Address: 0x0212134d
-or-
The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved or renamed.
Or, you may receive the following error message when you try to insert a Microsoft Excel worksheet into a WordPad document:
Failed to create object. Make sure that the object is entered in the system registry.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You are using Microsoft Excel on Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0.

    -and-


  • You have previously loaded either the Excel AutoSave add-in or the Analysis Toolpak - VBA add-in.

    -and-


  • Excel is not running.

    -and-


  • You try to insert an Excel object into another program.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Start Excel Before Inserting the Object

Ensure that Excel is running before you insert an Excel object into other program.

NOTE: If you have problems starting Microsoft Excel after receiving one of the error messages listed in this article, save your work if necessary, shut down the computer, and then restart Microsoft Windows NT.

Method 2: Remove the Excel Add-In

To remove the Microsoft Excel add-ins mentioned in the Cause section, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Add-Ins.


  2. Click to clear the check boxes for the Analysis Toolpak - VBA and the Autosave add-ins.


  3. Click OK.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.


MORE INFORMATION

If you receive the error messages in this article under Windows NT 3.51, click OK or Retry in the error message dialog box to successfully continue inserting the object.
