ID: Q185191

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Outlook, versions 8.00, 8.01, 8.02, 8.03, 97
  • Microsoft Outlook 98

SYMPTOMS

When you reply to an e-mail message using Word Mail as the e-mail editor in Microsoft Outlook and you click Show Me in the Microsoft Office Assistant, you may receive the following message

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
When you click Details, you receive the following error message:
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in module WINWORD.EXE at
0137:<address>

CAUSE

Certain commands in Word are not supported in WordMail. When the Show Me button actives the Help file topic for one of those commands, Outlook, WordMail, and Word stop responding (hang).

WORKAROUND

To release the programs that have stopped responding, follow these steps:

  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL.

  2. Click Outlook message.

  3. Click End Task.

  4. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL.

  5. Click Winword.

  6. Click End Task.

NOTE: Word stops responding even if it does not appear to be running (it is running because WordMail is running). This is why you must click End Task to quit Winword.exe in the Close Program window.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
