OFF97: Error Message: "The Configuration of the ODBC <Driver> Failed"

SYMPTOMS
When you run the Setup program for Microsoft Office, the following error
message appears:
Error while configuring ODBC drivers!
The configuration of the ODBC Microsoft FoxPro Driver (*.dbf)
driver failed.
-or-
The configuration of the ODBC Microsoft dBASE Driver (*.dbf)
driver failed.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when you install Microsoft Office and you currently
have newer versions of Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) components installed on your system.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Run the Office 97 File and Registry Eraser Utility
- Install and run the Office 97 File and Registry Eraser Utility
(Eraser97.exe).

- When Eraser97.exe completes, install Office 97.
Method 2: Install Office Without the Microsoft FoxPro Database Driver
When you install Office, do not include either the Microsoft
FoxPro database driver, or all of the data access components.
To install Office without the Microsoft FoxPro database driver, follow
these steps:
- Run the Office Setup program, in the Microsoft Office 97 Setup dialog
box, click Custom.
- In the Microsoft Office 97 - Custom dialog box, select Data Access and click Change Option.
- In the Microsoft Office 97 - Data Access dialog box, select Database Drivers and click Change Option.
- In the Microsoft Office 97 - Database Drivers dialog box, click the
dBASE and Microsoft FoxPro Drivers to clear the check box.
- Click OK to go back to the Microsoft Office 97 - Custom dialog box.
Select the additional Office components you want to install, and then
click Continue.
Method 3: Rename the ODBC Files
To rename the ODBC files, use the following steps:
- Quit all running programs.
- Click Start, point to Find, and click Files or Folders.
- In the Look in list, click My Computer. Click to select the include subfolders check box. In the Named box, type each of the following file names separated by a space:
Msjt3032.dll
Odbcji32.dll
Odbcjt32.dll
Odbctl32.dll
- In the list of files found, right-click each file, and on the shortcut menu, click Rename.
- Rename each file by changing the file name extension to ".old" (without the
quotation marks). If you do not have one of these files, go to the next one.
- Run Office Setup again.
Method 4: Install Office Without the Data Access Components
To install Office without any of the data access components, follow
these steps:
- When you run the Setup program, in the Microsoft Office 97 Setup dialog box, click Custom.
- In the Microsoft Office 97 - Custom dialog box, click Data Access to clear the check box.
- Select the additional Office components you want to install, and then
click Continue.
