OFF97: How to Install Office onto Terminal Server

This article describes how to install Office on Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition, and outlines some known issues and limitations of this configuration.

To Install Office

To install Office, you must use Install mode. Do either of the following to enter Install mode on the Terminal Server client:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.


  2. Click Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and click Command Prompt.


  2. At the Command Prompt, type Change User /install.


  3. NOTE:Type Change user /execute to return the server to its default running state.
To install Office on Terminal Server, follow these steps:
  1. Run the Office Setup program. Once the installation is complete, do not allow Setup to restart the system.


  2. While still in Install mode, run the Office97.cmd Application Compatibility Script. This script optimizes the Windows registry settings and other variables for the multiuser environment. All scripts are located in the following folder on the server:
    
    %systemroot%\Application Compatibility Scripts\Install\Office97.cmd 
    where %systemroot% is the drive letter of your Terminal Server where the Windows NT system is installed. When running the Office Compatibility script a drive needs to be selected which is the first of 3 consecutive free drive letters. The drive letter W is recommended.


  3. Restart your computer.

Description of Issues on Terminal Server

Office has various program compatibility issues, including:
  • Files that need permissions different from the default.


  • Files that need to be moved to the user's root directory.


  • Removal of the Find Fast option.


To correct these issues, after installing Office you must run the application compatibility script mentioned earlier in this article.

The installation script will also add the

%systemroot%\Application Compatibility Scripts\Logon\Ofc97Usr.Cmd 
script to UsrLogon.cmd. This script ensures that the needed per-user folders and files have been configured.

Limitations with Office on Terminal Server

Running Office on Terminal Server has certain limitations.

Office 97 Custom Dictionaries

The only per-user custom dictionary is the file, Custom.dic created in the \Office97 folder in the user's root directory. The list of custom dictionaries is not private for each user. Any new custom dictionaries that are created will be seen by all users.

Office 97 Menu Animation

Users should avoid enabling the Menu Animation feature in Office. Enabling this feature can severely affect system performance.

Microsoft Access 97

Some Access wizards and tools do not support concurrent use, including the following:

  • Combo Box Wizard


  • List Box Wizard


  • Lookup Wizard


  • Option Group Wizard


  • Table Analyzer Wizard


  • Table Wizard


  • Field Builder


  • Switchboard Manager


  • Database Documenter Wizard


  • Database Documenter is not supported on servers using the NTFS file system and running securely. To use the Documenter database, users must have permission to modify the System.mdw file. To use Database Documenter, users must be granted Write permission on the %systemroot%\System32\System.mdw file.
  • Creating Access 97 Workgroups


  • If you create a new Access workgroup using Wrkgadm.exe, change the security permissions on the new Workgroup Information file for the Administrator group and the Everyone group, to Read permissions, to make Access available to all users. Only administrators can create Workgroup Information files.

  • Adding Users to Access 97 Workgroups


  • To add users to an Access Workgroup with the Security command, you must first change permissions on the Workgroup Information file to Write (the default Workgroup information file is %systemroot%\System32\System.mdw). Once users have been added, you should change permissions back to Read.

Microsoft PowerPoint 97 Conference Presentations

The PowerPoint Presentation Conference command can be used by only one person on the server. It is not possible for several people on a server to conference among themselves.
