ID: Q240264

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Access 97
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 For Windows
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

Office programs close suddenly when you try to save or open (on the File menu, click Save or Open) when FTP locations are present and only one top-level shell folder exists on the Desktop.

CAUSE

On a standard Windows installation, this problem can occur if the Briefcase icon is deleted from Desktop and the "No Network Neighborhood" (NoNethood) policy is set for the user. Then the only top-level folder in the hierarchy below Desktop is My Computer, causing Office to search for the Add/Modify FTP Locations item beyond the end of the Look in list.

WORKAROUND

Add any folder to the desktop.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
