OFF98: "Memory Error Initializing Buffers" When You Run Office Installer with Now Tabs

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Office Installer, you may receive the following error message:

Memory error initializing buffers.

1009:1,-108 Out of memory


CAUSE

This problem occurs if Now Tabs is running when you run the Microsoft Office Installer.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, disable Now Tabs, and then run the installation program. To disable Now Tabs, follow these steps:

  1. Start Extensions Manager.

    Extensions Manager is located in one of the following folders:
    System Folder:Control Panels
    System Folder:Control Panels (Disabled)


  2. Click Create New Set if you receive the following alert:

    The Selected set does not match the contents of your System Folder. Do you want to update the selected set to match, revert to the selected set, or create a new set that matches?


  3. Click to clear the Now Tabs check box, and then click Restart.


After your computer has been restarted, run the Microsoft Office Installer. After you install Office, select Now Tabs again in the Extensions Manager and restart the computer.
